How to compress an image

Questions

Is compressing an image here really private?
Yes. Compression runs on your device using the browser's own image codecs — the file is read from disk into this tab and never sent over the network.
Does compressing a PNG work the same way as a JPEG?
Not quite. JPEG and WebP are lossy formats, so lowering quality gives a large size drop. PNG is lossless — re-encoding it here still strips unnecessary metadata and often shrinks it, but not as dramatically. If a PNG needs to get much smaller, converting it to WebP (see Convert image) usually helps more than recompressing it as a PNG.
Will this resize my image?
No — dimensions stay exactly the same. This tool only changes how efficiently the pixels are encoded. For smaller dimensions, use Resize image.
Is there a file size limit?
100 MB per file, and 30 files per batch, limited by your device's memory rather than a paid tier.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email, and no usage cap. Nothing about your files is logged.

About compressing images

Photos taken on a phone or exported from editing software are usually encoded conservatively, leaving quality on the table that nobody can actually see on a screen. Compression re-encodes the pixel data at a quality setting tuned for that gap — small enough to matter, high enough that a side-by-side comparison at normal viewing size looks identical.
The three levels here map to how much of that headroom to use: Light barely touches it, Balanced takes the difference nobody notices, Extreme takes it as far as it goes before softness becomes visible. Everything runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, never queued on a server, and never deleted from one — because it was never there.
